finding Heading 4

Jeff

I am trying to use an additional Heading level, specifically "Heading
4", but I can not find it among the list of available headings and if I
try to create a new style I am told "the style already exists or is
reserved for a built in style". But I cannot find it. What to do?

Thanks.

Suddenly I found it!

Sorry.

FWIW, if you don't see a certain style in the Styles and Formatting pane (Word
2003) you can type the style name into the Style box (on the Formatting toolbar)
and press Enter to apply them.

In Word 2007 or 2010, you can use the Apply Styles pane (Ctrl+Shift+S) in a
similar fashion.

And in Word 2003 and earlier (and Word 2007 if you have added the Style
dropdown to the QAT), you can press Shift while pressing the arrow on the
Style dropdown to force Word to display All Styles.

Thank you all.

I had forgotten about that one. Then again, I don't use Word 2003 much these
days.

I use little else--2007 only for reference, and 2010 is installed only on
the laptop that isn't usually running, and I haven't really had a chance to
explore it much yet.

I haven't purchased Office 2010 yet, but I guess I have to get up to speed with
that version sooner or later.. :)

I'm running Word 2003 and Word 2007 on my Windows XP desktop computer (which is
growing old and soon must be replaced); I recently bought a laptop with Windows
7 Home where I installed Office 2007 only.

By the way, I find Windows 7 rather annoying, because it hides Control Panel
items. Maybe the Professional version will be better. Or when I replace my
desktop maybe I'll find one with Windows XP...

Ditto on most of that (2007-vintage XP desktop with 2003 and 2007; newish
laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium and, until recently, Office 2007
Ultimate), the only difference being that I was offered a free copy of
Office 2010 Pro because I merely signed up for the beta (never actually
downloaded it and certainly didn't participate), so I installed that on the
laptop, replacing Office 2007 (instead of trying to run them side by side).
I may eventually install the MSDN copy of Office 2010 on the desktop if I
think it can bear the weight of three versions running concurrently.

I belatedly found that you can access all of Control Panel in Windows 7 by
actually *searching* for the bits you are convinced must exist. I haven't
used Windows 7 enough to really detest it (though I've found it frustrating
at times), and there are some things about it that I quite like. Part of
that, though, is that there are some things about the laptop that I quite
like compared to the desktop.

When you are in the Control Panel window...
Top right hand corner "View by"
Try Small icons rather than "Category".

Yes, I've tried searching too. I might have seen the suggestion in one of your
posts elsewhere! I still find it annoying, though...

However, Dave's suggestion sounds promising. :)

I have only done limited testing so far, but it seems as if the "View by" option
isn't being saved?

Why am I not surprised? That has always been the case in the New dialog in
Word.

However, view options in Windows *Explorer* was/is being saved in Windows XP, at
least for "ordinary" folders.

Is that true for Control Panel? I know I always get Icons, but it may just
be that I've been too lazy to change it to anything else (which it does seem
to be possible to do).

I wasn't sure about Control Panel; that's why I wrote "ordinary" folders
(meaning just a regular file folder). However, looking at Control Panel on my
desktop computer, I do have folders sorted in "Details" view, which is my
preference, so it appears to be possible in Windows XP Professional.
