Can I copyright photos on ourwebsite?

We have a company website that was created in Front Page. Is it possible to
copyright or protect our photos from being copied and saved by users? We use
Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0, and I seem to remember seeing somewhere that
you could do this, but cannot find the subject anywhere. Is it possible?

Hi dptgirl,

It is not possible to prevent any images from being taken..if they can be
seen. Once viewed the image is already in the viewer's cache and can be had.
Many other ways to take it as well.

There are a couple tricks out there that some people think might help..such
as a no right click script. This however does not prevent anyone that wants
the image from taking it. It really doesn't prevent image theft and can
actually irritate site viewers. You can put a copyright notice on the
site..and possibly watermark the images..but that is about the best you can
do..outside of not posting the images at all.

Copyright is implied if you make the statement that you reserve your right
on the website for content and images. You must post a comment to reserve
your "intellectual property rights". But to keep persons from copying is
impossible with those that have the know-how as Joe Rohn has inferred. You
can alsways download a right click disabling feature addon and post it to
your websight to deter image copying but many persons have the know-how to go
around this feature and still copy a photo or image.

Actually, you do not need to put any notice of copyright up- once the page
is published the image is protected by copyright law.

The no-right-click script is considered amateurish, and one only needs to
disable javascript to re-activate. I also get irritated by the adoption of
these techniques as I heavily use my right-click for all of the other things
it can do.

Just as easy to press the PrintScreen button to put it on the clipboard.
The best way to display an image that you don't want snagged is to make it
unattractive for thef, by using a watermark as Joe replied originally.

I am having the same problem, and when I spoke to a professional, they
indicated that when they post a galley on a website, they use a java script
to protect them, Is this option available with frontpage. On a related note,
is it feasible to burn the photos as a slide show, and post it on the website
as a "movie or slide show" as opposed to jpeg?

Your "professional" needs lessons - Javascript is useless for protecting
images: turn off Javascript and where is the protection? You Cannot
protect anything you place on a website.
Anything you publish is automatically copyrighted under UK and US laws
(ask a lawyer to verify that - I am not a lawyer), but not necessarily
under the laws for other countries.
You should use low resolution images (good enough for the web, useless
for anything else) for the site, make a gallery in Flash offers a little
protection (there is always print screen to get the image). Even scenes
from movies can be copied.

Thanks. Is making a movie in flash a part of frontpage, or will I have to
create it separately and upload to frontpage.

Also, I know that a DVD slide show produces the images as a movie and not as
individual photos - is this the gist of this flash option. I use DVD slide
shows to show customers their proofs, as opposed to printing hardcopy prints
or giving them a disk full of jpeg images. So, can I just produce a slide
show movie of the photos and upload that to frontpage?

I know how to create a photo gallery in front page, but I am unsure how to
upload a "movie." Also, if I try the movie option, will I run into file size
issues, and puny/small resoltuion movies that may not be worth viewing?
Thanks.

You will have do this outside of FP with a 3rd party application.
