Can global effects, transitions, or edits be made?

I use Windows Movie Maker in the most basic of ways to string still pictures
together into musical slideshows. Often, I want to apply the same transition
or effects to a large group of elements. Dragging the selected effect or
transition to a pre-selected/highlighted list of elements below does not seem
to work. Any help appreciated.

And while I'm on the global change topic, is there a way to select a large
number of elements and change the duration displayed without having to alter
each individually?

Select clips/slides in the storyboard view, by:
a. Click on first and Shift-Click on last to select all in the range
b. Ctrl-Click to add individual slides to the selection

Now right click the transition/effect you want to apply to all the selected
items and select Apply to Storyboard. It gets applied to all of the selected
items. Note that Ctrl-D is the shortcut to "Apply to Slideshow/Timeline"

To change the default duration of Pictures and transitions go to
Tools->Option->Advanced and set these duratrions. They would be used next
time anything is added to the storyboard. Also see my trick to specify exact
duration for these things: http://www.rehanfx.org/tips.htm
