I would like to load DOS operating system on my computer
that runs on XP Home Edition. My reason for wanting to
do this is to see if I can then load an old version of
Word Perfect (5.0)that will only work with DOS. I
purchased Word Perfect 10, but that version does not have
the old versions global search and retrival option. I
have a lot of data connected to my old Word Perfect
program and would like to be able to use my new computer
with that old program. My fear is that if I load DOS on
my computer it might overide Windows XP.

Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me, and MS-DOS

If you use a third party program like "System Commander" or "Partition
Magic" you can resize your XP partition, create a DOS partition, and use the
System Commander to select the operating system you want to use upon
starting your computer.

It is possible to do this without the third party program, but it is a lot
of extra work.

Others who have done this will probably give you some other choices. Good
luck!

I have 3 floppies that load DOS- 1 each 4 DI6,PM7, &
last made by XP. Dont know if these have enuf muscle -
I never worked with DOS other than these 3.

Would be easier than dual-booting tho.

If you don't want to do this all that often, you could simply use an old
DOS boot disk (check out bootdisk.com for pre-made disks with all the
various utilities and CDROM drivers and stuff already lumped in)
whenever you wanted to access the WordPErfect stuff.

The main thing is that DOS must have a FAT partition to work on, and
your XP is probably on an NTFS one. So you will need one of the third
party partition managers to make a FAT (use FAT 32) partition for it,
and they will come with a Boot Manager which is best for keeping the two
systems separate anyway. I'd then look for a Win98 CD and startup disk,
and install that - once done, you can put a BootGUI=NO line in its
MSDOS.SYS file so it always boots in DOS mode

You will probably need to move the XP partition along, so as to have the
DOS one, and the boot manager, up front or there may be trouble booting
the DOS. And you need to keep the XP in the same place in the partition
*table* or it will not boot properly (with 'hal.dll not found'
messages). So it can be a bit tricky to set up - but quite possible
