Can contacts be password-hidden?

Is it possible to "hide" or password-protect certain contacts in Outlook
2002 (or Outlook 2003). Am using WinXP, if that matters

Am sync'ing Outlook to Palm V. The old PalmDESKTOP software I used to use
enabled me to mark certain contacts (Palm calls them addresses) with
"private" and then only if I enter a password do all of the private records
show along with the regular ones.

I do still have the password-protect thing on the Palm V HANDHELD unit (have
to enter password to show all records).

You can password protect an entire .PST file, but not individual items or
folders. Who are you trying to hide the items from? There may be other
ways to accomplish the same overall result.

Thank you Jocelyn,

I noticed in the add-contact box at very bottom right, there's a check box
called... [ ] Private. I checked it, and the contact still shows up. On
a PalmDesktop and PalmOS(handheld), when you make a record "Private", it
drops it (and all other private ones) from view unless you click on SHOW
RECORDS and enter the password, let's say 12345. To re-conceal ALL the
private records again, you click HIDE RECORDS. On who hiding from, there
are two groups.

1) "unauthorized PalmHandheld taker"... If PalmHandheld is lost, it won't
show let's say Wachovia, Fidelity, Visa, etc. ("private" financial accounts
with account numbers, credit cards, etc.). And this works well.

2) "unauthorized Outlook user"... This is more what the posted question is
about...If someone clicks Outlook on PC, there are all the financial
accounts. Yes, I could password the whole Outlook file, or whole PC, etc.
but I'd rather not have to enter lots of codes every day, just once in while
when I need to see let's say a financial account. Appreciate any
suggestions, thanks.

Yep, I own a Palm unit also so I know how the private designation works on
Palm records :) However, Outlook doesn't work that way. If you are
concerned about keeping Outlook data private, you'll need to password
protect either your .PST file or your PC. You can poke around
www.slipstick.com for possible 3rd party addins or coding solutions that
might hide private items more like the Palm does, but I don't know of any
offhand.

Thanks Jocelyn, another great response, extremely helpful. I do have one
brief follow on question...wondered what the Outlook [X] Private box
actually does. This is what I'm observing so far:

-On PALM, it "receives" the private notation via a sync from Outlook, which
is good since that enables the Show (with a password) or Hide function on
the handheld.

-In OUTLOOK, unsure what it does, other than just show a box that is
checked. Nothing private seems to get treated any differently. Ideas?

It's used to hide items from other Outlook users who are sharing your
folders, as within an Exchange server environment (I'm not sure if it has
any effect when sharing via other methods, such as Net Folders).
