Camera & PC compatibility

I'm thinking of upgrading my digital compact camera to either a Nikon D50, or
a Canon EOS350D. I would appreciate any comments as to which camera to buy,
and what if any special software I would need for that particular camera.

I don't think I am qualified to give you advice about these cameras.
One thing you can do is go to this site:

Extensive reviews on cameras available there.
Also you can check the Canon and Nikon forums there and see what is going
on.
Obviously you will get some partisan posts for Canon vs Nikon but this is to
be expected from respective camera owners, but you can sort it out.
