Call Of Duty choppy play

G

glen

I just bought a Radeon 9800 Pro and a Creative
Audigy 2 ZS. The problem is that when I enable
the EAX sound the game becomes choppy reguardless of
how low the settings are for the video card. When I put the sound back to
the2D positional option the game plays flawlessly. Even with all the goodies
turned up on the Radeon. Why do I get choppy game play with EAX enaled?

It's a common problem. There's a lot going on in CoD and EAX uses a lot or
memory. My frame rates drop about 40% when using it. On the other hand, they
don't drop at all when I use 2D at the highest quality setting. There's
nothing wrong with your sound or video card.

Maybe its an Audigy 2 problem (*dramaticly steps back in mock
amazement*), I don't get a drop when using it with my NForce 2
Soundstorm audio.

Sorry to bust your bubbles, but my original Audigy and 9700 Pro run COD just
fine with all the bells...using EAX 3,2 or 1.

I have an Audigy card, Radeon 9700 pro, and an old 1800+ CPU. I play the
game with EAX and at 1600x1200 with 60 fps on average (no AA or AF). I
don't think you should be experiencing a slow down of this magnitude. I
don't think this is normal. THG tested an Audigy card sometime in the past
and it's load on the CPU was about 1-2% (negligible). Unfortunately I don't
have to solution for you, but don't be fooled into believing that this is
normal. See if there are any updated drives on Creative's site. I'd try
contacting them, too. Go to CoD website to see if anybody had a similar
problem

Same here with 9700 Pro and Audigy 2 (not ZS).

How much memory are you using? I suspect that many of todays games cause
stuff to be saved in virtual memory unless you have loads of memory, and
this is the culprit.

I had loads of 'choppy game' problems until I invested in more memory (512Mb
1024Mb). All problems in all previously jerky games vanished (Far cry
demo, Lock-on, etc). Games where I hear some people have problems (KOTOR
etc) just dont seem to happen with my box now, and the box is not even
cutting edge (XP2000 and Radeon 9500, although upgrade on order to take
advantage of the falling dollar :)

Yes, Daniel and the others are right. I'm using a the built in RealTek sound
card. My own findings were the same as those on some of the CoD web sites I
visited, so I assumed it was normal for all sound cards, not just RealTek
and SBLive.
http://www.tweakfactor.com/articles/tweaks/codtweak/2.html
Talks about frame rate differences.

http://www.teamwarfare.com/forums/showthread.asp?forumid=107&threadid=111324
This one from Team Warfare complains about SBLive and Audigy 2 problems.
I don't have the Firing Squad link handy, but somewhere in there someone
with an SBLive also complains about the same thing.

From what I understand, the latest Audigy driver update has increased EAX
performance, if you haven't tried it already.
I'm going to try the latest RealTek drivers and if that doesn't help, I may
put my old SBLive 5.1 back in and try the latest drivers for that.
Hey, I learned something new today. Thanks gents :)

I installed new drivers for my RealTek built in sound card, but the fps hit
was still real bad when using EAX. Then I reinstalled my old SBLive Xgamer
with the newest drivers. Using the Miles sound option in CoD, I got an extra
25 fps over the RealTek. I think my frame rate in Nr2003 doubled. I had no
idea that there would be this big of a difference. Nevertheless, using EAX
in CoD, the frame rates dropped from 180 to 106.

I'm still reading reviews that say that even the Audigy 2 sound cards lose
frame rates in CoD with EAX. This has nothing to do with them only having a
1 to 2 % CPU utilization. It has to do with memory and processing. Here's an
example of one review at:
http://www.preys-world.com/Reviews.php?NotList=1&Gid=38
It says:
"Played At - 1600X1200 resolution 2X AA, 2X AF. High Body Count, Highest
Texture Detail. I turned EAX off as it was causing framerate issues.

System Spec:
Processor - P4 2.8ghz
RAM - 1Gb RD RAM 800mhz
Graphics Card - ATI Radeon 9700 Pro
Sound Card - Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Platinum"

Now, I planned on getting an Audigy or Audigy 2 based on the fact that some
of you report no frame rate loss and others simply say you have no problems
playing CoD with EAX and an Audigy (Im not sure if that means you're not
dropping frames or not).
Before I order an Audigy, let me ask you this. Are you sure you tested this
in a timedemo and didnt' lose frame rates? And, did you remember to change
com_maxfps "85" to "0" before you ran the timedemo?

Before I order a new sound card, I'd just like to be sure we're talking
about losing frame rates, not just talking about the game being playable. So
far I can't find a CoD review stating that there is no frame rate loss with
EAX and an Audigy sound card, but I can find some stating there is.
I just want to be sure, gents. I'm trusting you.

I can recommend using the AM3D Miles plug-in instead of using the EAX
setting in CoD. It works really well with headphones. You can get it at
http://www.am3d.com under the beta section. Only downside is that you
have to configure it manually in the CoD config file.
