Calculator missing

R

Rob

Running XP Home SP3. I have 2 issues that I think may have happened when
running a Windows Update a few weeks ago:

1. Calculator is missing. It's not in the Accessories menu anymore.
2. Volume control is missing from Task Bar and I don't know how to get it
back

Any suggestions on getting these back?

Thanks
Rob

How do you know?

It's not in the Accessories menu anymore.

That's very different from "missing." In all probability it's still
there, and just the shortcut to it is missing from the Programs menu.

Find the program calc.exe in \Windows\system32, create a shortcut to
it, and put that shortcut on the desktop, Quick Launch Bar, Programs
menu, etc.--wherever you want it.

If you don't know how to do that, post back for more help.

2. Volume control is missing from Task Bar and I don't know how to get it
back

Go to Control Panel | Sounds, and turn it on there.

Thanks, Ken. Found the calc.exe and put copy in my All Programs/Accessories.
Runs fine .

On the Volume, tried your suggestion. When I try to place volume icon to
Task Bar, error says 'Volume Control Program not installed. Use add/remove
programs'
When I go there, I don't see the Volume Control in Accessories.

Suggestion?
Thx
Rob

Hi Rob,

Check Start Menu> (all)Programs> Accessories, (where Calculator is.)
Is Paint there? How about Notepad, Wordpad and Address Book?

Volume Control:
Look for sndvol32.exe in Start> Run> [type next line, press Enter:]
%SystemRoot%\system32

If not there, check Start> Run> [Enter next line:]
%SystemRoot%\system32\dllcache

(Caution: Right-click Copy, do not move. Dllcache is a super hidden system
folder used by Windows File Protection. Shhh... Walk Softly... :)

The Volume shortcut goes in Start> Run [Enter next line:]
C:\Docume~1\AllUse~1\StartM~1\Programs\Accessories\Entertainment

The shortcut Properties, Shortcut Tab, Comment, should say:
Controls the volume level of recorded and play-back sounds.

Are you missing Sound Recorder also? Start> Run> [Enter next line:]
%SystemRoot%\system32\sndrec32.exe
Records sounds if a microphone and sound card are installed.

Please report back here with results or further questions.

HTH. (Hope This Helps. :)

Solved. You picked up on key conditions (Paint and Wordpad were also missing
from Accessories) but after trying many angles to repair, the one that
worked was accidental but simple. BTW sndvol32.exe was in Recycler!

In Add/Delete Windows Components I also noticed that Freecell was not
installed so I checked it and ran the install, taking files off my XP CD.

For the heck of it, tried checking the 'Add Volume Icon to Task Bar' - NO
ERROR this time! Voila, volume control on task bar.
Wordpad, Calculator and Paint are back where they should be.

Solution: Check to add any new item in Accessories in Add/Remove Windows
Components and let the XP CD disk install all that are missing.

Thanks for giving me a kick-start!
