Calculations

I have a user with a spreadsheet that will not return a value for
calculations. For instance, if you enter the formula +C10+C20 in cell C21,
it returns a value of "0", even though there are values in these cells. I
have checked the formatting of these cells and typed and re-typed the values
several times and still get "0". I have tried moving to different sheets
with different cells and still get "0".

Any ideas on what could be causing this?

Thanks,

Mike

Automatic calculation is not the problem. There is something else that could
be causing this problem?

Perhaps there's a circular reference error somewhere
Try checking the Iterations box (in Tools > Options > Calculation tab)
It's best of course to correct the circular error(s)

Try opening and closing the workbook
It is possible that calculation has been disabled for this sheet, re-opening
will turn it back on.

Also try entering a 1 in a cell then copy it, select your data cells and do
edit>>paste special>>multiply, just to make sure Excel is definitely seeing
them as numbers

If not post back

cheers

Hi Mike;

I have been experiencing the same problems with my Clients. A few questions
before I continue,
1. When did they last reboot?
2. Is the machine a Laptop?

I ask because in every case I have seen this problem (12 so far), in all but
1 the client hadn't rebooted in a few days, and the machines were laptops.

The only solution I have been able to come up with is restarting the computer.
I have been scouring the forums and internet for situations like this. If I
find anything else I will let you all know.

Let's do check the stupid stuff as well (most solutions pointt to something
overlooked).

Ensure that the values are indeed values and not text. I have seen some
cells that have been imported that look like numbers actually be text. A
quick test is to edit the cell (while highlighted press F2 or click in the
formula bar) and simply press enter. This will force Excel to re-examine the
cell.
