Caching causes Safe Mode

I'm working on a computer for a co-worker who doesn't know what changed but
could only boot to Safe Mode. In checking things out I turned OFF the Level
1 and Level 2 caching in the bios. (Phoenix). I was then able to use
Diagnostic Startup and boot to the normal desktop. I've rebooted several
times this way. When I I ENABLED the caching I could only get to Safe Mode.
I disabled it again and again can get to the normal desktop using Diagnostic
Startup. Any thoughts?

Try power off,clear the CMOS,remove the battery,locate the CMOS jumper
pin,move from 1-2 to 2-3 position for .45 seconds or so,then back to
1-2,replace
battery,start pc.Youll need to reset basic BIOS settings before you try to
start
xp,date/time,etc..
 
Thanks Andrew. Your solution makes sense but I'm a bit nervous to try it.
Since I'm doing this as a favor I'm tempted to explain the problem and have
the owner take the computer to a shop to have it done. Am I just being a
chicken uneccesarily? Is it pretty foolproof if I follow your steps
exactly?
