Cache problem?

On my PC when I selected to have disk cache on or select
best performance of disk cache, when I restarted the
computer windows failed to load reporting that 'An I/O
device has failed unrecoverably...........' and other
following error messages saying that a 'delayed write
failed' and that 'C:\WINDOWS\System 32 cold not be saved.
The data is lost'.
I had to reinstall windows, and it happened again, on two
different hard drives with seperate installations of
Windows. Does this always happen with disk caching
enabled?
I wanted it enabled because it apparantly improves
performance in gaming and other intensive work that I do
on my computer.
This is a very annoying problem. I wonder if I can be
told how to cure it? Is there a fix for it? I should hope
there is. I'm rather p***ed off with Windows F-ing up my
computer, to be blunt.

Sorry for being so being so angry but it's very
inconvenient, especially when I've just upgraded my PC
totally.
Your solution may be to select best performance
of 'programs' rather than performance but I don't see why
Windows can't run with caching enabled. A product that
doesn't do what it should is no good

My hardware specs might help:
MSI 875P Neo-FIS2R Motherboard with 3.0GHz P4 and 1GB
400MHz RAM
120GB Maxtor SATA drive
120GB WD PATA drive
ATI radeon 9800 Pro graphics

HAve you checked to see if there are any drivers re: the
motherbaord and/or IDE drivers - that's quite a new mobo.
