Please, can anyone help me? I am trying to set up a workgroup at home and my PC, running windows xp pro keeps telling me that my ethernet cable is unplugged which it isnt, I have just checked the cable and it is a patch cable which I understand you have to use with a hub which I do not have but surely thet PC would still recognise that the cable is plugged in? Help please!!

Hi, Richie -

You'll need to get a crossover cable if you're trying to
work without a hub - a plain old patch cable won't work
and that's why you're seeing the 'cable unplugged' error.

Most any computer store can sell you a crossover cable or
convert your patch cable for you - since you don't have a
hub or Ethernet switch in your network you'll need a
special cable that has two pairs of wires reversed on one
end - we call this a crossover cable.

The way Windows tells whether a cable is plugged in is it
listens for traffic on the cable - if it doesn't hear any
traffic at all it will tell you the cable is unplugged.
Switching that patch cable out for a crossover cable
should solve your problem.

Hope this helps -
