cable modem

this is a little complicated. i recently (today)
installed XP Pro on a system which was connected to an
ambit cable modem via a linksys router. this system
previously ran windows ME and had no connection problems,
after installation of XP internet traffic on the one
machine stopped (the other machine sharing the router was
unaffected). the connection led's were still lit on the
router and the link led on the back plate for the network
card was lit also. at first i thought that the settings
established by the router had been reset and using the cd
supplied with the router attempted to restore them. my
attempts at this have all timed out. next i assumed the
problem was with the router and tried to connect the
modem directly to the one machine, this involved me
reinstalling the cable modem, this then failed, no
traffic was flowing. at this point i thought that perhaps
the network card/cat cable were broken so i attempted to
run the modem via a usb connection, to the exact same
results. i must point out that i have power cycled the
modem, computer and router several times with the new
connection types. upnp is enabled and the computer in
question is fully USB 2.0 equipped. the machine is
running an unpatched non SP-1 XP, the NIC is a realtek
8139 series card and the motherboard is an MSI kt-7, I
have an almost identical configuration and have recieved
no problems, however XP in my case was a clean install.
any suggestions (sensible ones, nothing about where i can
stick the cable modem please) would be highly appreciated

What IP address is the router providing to your client? This may be an
issue with the drivers XP installed.

i would also like to add that i have found the source of
the USB problems when using the modem, I forgot to
reinstall the USB controller driver, why oh why when you
install a new OS does it think "oh look a nice working
fully compatable driver, I'll over-write that now just to
be an annoyance"
