C:\$mft corruption message.

On a critical WIN 2000 machine, I keep getting an error message popping up
saying "C:\$mft is corrupt and unreadable. Please run chkdsk."

I have ran chkdsk and it does not fix the problem. What can i do to fix this
annoying, yet critical problem?

Try disabling messenger - it allows of a lot of ad/malware which comes
in from the ether. I got a raft of messages stating the registry was
bad until I shut messenger off. You may also try to use the hosts file,
but I've forgotten how that works - too long ago.

Hmmm... That would be a new low for the Windows Messenger Service that
it would now be responsible for errors in the Master File Table. I
don't discard the possibility as I don't know of this possible new
development. But, even for the Messenger Service, it does seem remote
to me.

I don't know the answer and maybe it's nothing too serious but it's the
kind of thing that would have me bitting my fingernails! Make sure all
the critical files on that drive are properly backed up!

Maybe the MFT has grown to an ungainly size. Keep in mind that as a
failsafe mechanism the MFT mirrors every entry. How many files do you
have on this machine? Try deleting unneeded files. Try to reduce the
metadata entries by turning off things like short filenames (8.3 Name
Creation), last access and the likes.

I can't say that this will help or change the situation but it's the
kind of things that I would start with. Just a brainstorm... or maybe
brain farts! ;-)

What are the exact error messages found in the System Event Log regarding
this? Look before and after. Is there any indication that what might
actually be occuring is a hardware issue?

When you ran CHKDSK on the drive, did you do the 3 stage "brief" check or
the 5 stage "complete check"?
