Bonnie

HI,
I just ran spybot on my system for the first time and it
comes up with this C:\C_Dilla, says is is spyware about
copy right this or that, can I delete this without it
messing up my computer, I have ad-aware and downloaded
spybot last nite because of reading what a lot of people
were saying that spybot will pick up things that ad-aware
doesn't.
Thank you for your time
Bonnie

That sucker comes with several real programs. I got it with my Turbotax.

To fully uninstall the the SafeCast/C-Dilla element of TurboTax, you must
download the free uninstall application at the TurboTax Support website. For
additional information about product activation, go to
http://www.turbotaxsupport.com and refer to TurboTax Product Activation in
the News and Tips section.

Thank you, you mean I have to go somewhere else to get
this off my computer, Spybot won't remove it? Bonnie

I highly recommend SpyBot Search and Destroy and delete
any spyware\adware that it automatically selects. This
will make programs like KaZaA useless but then it is a
useless program anyway. Any program that installs
spyware\adware on your OS is useless and garbage in my
opinion. If on the other hand you use a program with a
spyware component like "gator" and want this program even
though it transmits your information throughout the
internet resulting in increased spam and pop-ups to your
e:mail and surfing experiance then you should note what
program is related to the spyware\adware found by SpyBot
Search and Destroy and if you want that program or use it
don't delete it. This tool even finds all the temp and
history files on your OS and gives you the option of
manually deleting them. Keep smiling.

C_Dilla is copy-protection software that also -- according to some --
contains spyware. This was a big issue last Fall when it was included
in TurboTax. Do a Google search and you'll find lots of discussion on
the spyware aspects of CDilla.

Deleting CDilla may impact whatever application(s) installed it. If it
was only TurboTax (and assuming you no longer need last year's TurboTax)
you can delete it. If you delete it using Spybot, a ackup should be
created that will allow you to restore CDilla is something breaks.

Hi,
Their is no need to worry about deleting anything that
spybot or for that matter ad-aware detects both of these
programs creat a backup file, and if their was a mistake
and something stops working that you want, you can
restore it.

It works both ways; AdAware finds things SpybotS&D misses, too. Best to
use both to be sure.

Bonnie,

Someone else already noted that Turbo Tax may have installed this "copy
protection" scheme. It was also noted that you can use Spybot to remove
it - don't do it if you installed Turbo Tax. Use their installer which
is at their website.

The TTax installer not only installed C_Dilla but as a part of that
particular copy protection scheme, it also wrote to the boot sector of
the hard disk. That was one of the main items causing the uproar. Most
importantly, the TTax removal tool, called SafeCast uninstaller, removes
the code written to the boot sector. I don't think Spybot would have a
clue about that part.

Hope this helps, Fred

In addition to some of the other good comments, I can add
that I have contacted Turbotax and they assured me that
they are not including it in the 2003 and that it will not
migrate from the 2002 to the 2003 when you update data
from 2002

You won't mess up your computer, but the programs that put C-DILLA won't work
without it. If you still want it gone, Turbo Tax has made an uninstall program
for it. I only know of two prgrams that use it, Turbo Tax and the Oxford
English Dictionary CD Ver 3. I'm glad to read that Turbo Tax will exclude
C-DILLA in its next edition. OED denies that it is spyware in the first place.

C-Dilla, now called SafeCast, is a copy-protection scheme that comes bundled
with many applications, including AutoCAD and MathCAD. It can be very hard
to get rid of and invariably remains even if the app that installed it is
uninstalled.

That's nice, but I'm still leery of TT. I'll be using Taxbrain.com
this year instead.
