When I first installed XP left the password blank during
installation and whenever Windows booted up after that,
no password box appeared and Windows went directly to the
desktop.

A few days ago I had to do a clean reinstall of XP on the
same machine. Although I left the password blank,
whenever I boot up now, Windows asks me for a password. I
leave it blank amd hit ENTER and Windows tales to the
desktop. I have not found a way of eliminating the
request for a password. Has the Microsoft updates made
this impossible or can anyone tell me the solution

Click Start, Run and enter CONTROL USERPASSWORDS2 Uncheck Users must enter
a username and password............ Click Apply and enter your username.
Leave the password blank, since you didn't assign one.
