i'm running a dodgy version of xp
to upgrade to vista do i need a licesenced version of xp or can i just get a
upgrade version of vista?

If you are running a pirated copy of Windows XP Professional (or Home
Edition), you can very easily convert it into a properly licensed version by
just updating your XP Product Key that comes with the Get Genuine Kit.

http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/FAQ.aspx

Otherwise, you can purchase a full licensed version of Windows Vista and
discard that XP installation you currently have.

Much as I dislike Vista Microsoft justifiably should be paid for use of
their OS even if it is not very usable.

in the case of I think it would be appropriate for vista to pay its
consumers for their time wasted beta testing this problematic
os.

There have been several posts here in the past indicating that an 'upgrade
version' will indeed permit a full install.

In you're case, capin' crunch (you can't hide from us as*hole!)I'd
advise you not to use or comment any further on Vista.
It's obviously way smarter than you'll ever be.

Sorry pal but stability is not a problem with Vista.

For those who can't get Vista to work, in the main, they are renumerated
according to their abilities.

Although an upgrade may work, it may pose a problem down the road if the OP
doesn't have an XP disk. If he needs to reinstall at some point then he's
outta luck unless he has an XP CD.

No upgrades for what you want. The Home Premium version is the
lowest-cost version you should buy. Vista is rather pricey for an XP
machine upgrade, plus your machine will run much slower. If your PC
is >2 years old, wait to get a new machine with Vista on it or you may
run into all sorts of issues. Vista needs a lot more resources than
XP.
