I am looking a almost new 20" DEL lcd monitor for private sale.
Can anyone suggest what I should look for while viewing and testing it
before buying?

Dead pixels. Make the screen all black and then all white to check.

Look for anywhere that people may have pressed their fingers on to the
screen, and did some damage. Also look to see if there are too many dead
pixels. Check the monitor in a poorly lit environment. Look at it with a
full white, a grey, and a black screen. Check each of these states very
carefully. Also, check to see that there is no colour fringing, or noise in
the pictures. Turn up the brightness, and make sure it can delivery a good
bright picture. Without the proper test facilities, you will be limited to
what you can check.

After the monitor is on for about 15 minutes or so, lean over it to see if
you can smell if anything inside has burned. Sometimes this is an indication
of something that has failed, or is about to fail.
