Mark

I keep receiving these spam ads for purchasing Windows XP Professional
(Retail version) for $50.00.

When I go cheapsoftware.com:

http://www.cheapsoftware.com/

enter "windows xp professional" in the Software Search By Keywords
field, click GO, in the "Sponsored Links" section I click on the "Buy
Windows XP Pro -Cheap" link that frames this web page:

https://s.p2.hostingprod.com/@softysurplus.com/ssl/44.htm

How true is this deal?

TekDeal.com has Windows XP Professional for $119.00:

http://www.tekdeal.com/item.asp?n=winxppcdk&d=44&sc=GOOG&k=AD4

I find the full retail version of Windows XP Professional version for
$299.99 everywhere else; Best Buy Circuit City, buy.com ($279.94), etc.

Hi Mark,

I don't know how true that deal is, but there is one phrase that comes to
mind when I see that..........caveat emptor.

Regards,

any price below that of the name brand stores is not legal.
as microsoft controls pricing.

MS does not control pricing, it does control what price it
sells at retail. But $50 software is pirated and sold from
Russia. If they ship at all, it isn't a legal copy that can
be activated.
If you want spam to increase, just one person out of 10,000
needs to buy something.

Is the spam from cheapsoftware.com? I have purchased software from them
before and had no problems at all. That being said, $50.00 for Windows XP
Pro is a bit on the cheap side. I bought my copy of XP Home from them for
$95.00. Perfectly legitimate OEM copy with all the security features,
sticker, piece of hardware to satisfy the OEM requirements and the Windows
XP Home quick setup booklet. Even though they have my email address, I have
never received spam from them.

From their web page:

WE NEVER SEND OUT SPAM OR UNSOLICITED EMAIL... IF IT SAYS ITS FROM US... ITS
SIMPLY NOT TRUE.. DELETE IT AND REPORT IT TO FTC

Most likely this is a Phishing type operation and the crooks are collecting
bank account and credit card information.

I have never known cheapsoftware.com to spam anyone.

They are a legitimate company which requires all OEM software to be sold
with appropriate hardware. Their prices are just slightly above wholesale on
most items.

The e-mail address used in the spam is not from cheapsoftware.com, but
the links in the spam e-mail take you to the cheapsoftware.com site.

I never bought anything from cheapsoftware.com and I did not know they
existed until I received the spam e-mails showing Windows XP Pro for $50.

Companies that need to send spam out and clutter up my inbox never will
receive my business. This has been my own policy for years. If a
company has to lower their standards to get customers, its not
worthwhile dealing with the company.

Greetings --

Think about it for a moment. (Actually, I realize you have though
about it, or you wouldn't be asking. You're just seeking confirmation
of your suspicions.)

Would a legitimate business offering such stunning,
too-good-to-be-true bargains have to resort to spam advertising to get
the word out? There's nothing in the least bit legitimate about the
sites advertised in this manner. Have you visited any of the
advertised sites and you read the - broken English - FAQ?

"Simply because the CD's we sell are OEM [Original Equipment
Manufacturer] copies which means you will receive the installation CDs
only [they do not come in their original retail packing and do not
include the manual]. " OEM _and_ retail packaging? Hmmmm, how is
that possible?

"Can I register the software? No." Why not, if it's legitimate?

"I have purchased a CD but I have lost the serial key label. What can
I do? Panic not, as all CD's are shipped with the serial numbers
included in a text file [as well as on the CD sleeve label]. Simply
insert the CD into your CD-drive and search for a file called
serial.txt. Simply search the CD for this file. " _NO_ legitimate
installation CD - OEM or retail - comes with the Product Key stored in
a text file on the CD.

People who have admitted to succumbing to the temptations of these
sites have reported getting nothing more than a copy of one of the
several widely known pirated Volume Licensed versions, which won't
allow the installation of SP1, or any subsequent updates.

I actually did not read the FAQ. I guess I should have read the FAQ,
which I normally do. I just thought I would get some feedback on this
<sarcasm> terrific </sarcasm> $50 deal for XP Pro.

After reading your excerpts from the FAQ, there is a high probability
that these are pirated XP Pro. versions.

The serial.txt file existence on the CD alone flags these CD's as pirated!

I am against software piracy myself, so hopefully Microsoft will pursue
this company.
