burning to a dvd

in windows movie maker why does'nt it recognise a blank dvd disk when you
click copy to cd. is there any changes i could do
 
No. You must first record to your hard drive and then use a third party
program such as Roxio EZCD Creator or Sonic MyDVD to make the DVD.

FYI, DVD burning was added as a feature to the Windows
Media Center Edition. Since Movie Maker ships as part of
that OS SKU, you can burn directly to DVD when publishing
from MM without 3rd party software.
