I used to have Win 98 and I could burn CDs fine.
Recently I installed Win XP home. Now when I copy a CD,
about half way through, my read buffer drops slowly to 0%
and my burner goes on hold and waits for the buffer to
fill back up. Takes a long time to burn a CD. Why does
this happen now, and not before with 98?

It is the fact that windows suxs at burning software so
just got get Nero 5.5 but if ur broke like most people in
the tech stuff...then just go get real player (it has a
built in burner that works nicely).

I'm using Nero.
Never had this problem before. Could it be a lack of
memory? Right now I have 256 ddr.

Try setting the Nero buffer cache to 40% of your installed memory.
Nero->File->Preferences->Buffer Tab. Also ensure you defrag and reduce your
burn speed if burning mp3s as these need to be converted by the software
before being burned so the process is more resource intensive than with
regular data burns.
