burning cd/dvd

Recently M/P 10 and XP/SP2 have both ceased to recognize the rw/drives on the
system - have uninstalled rebooted and let the wiz reinstall - nothing , have
done the regedit bit as suggested in the help file - windows might recognizes
1 drive as recordable for a bit - M/P 10 says there are no rw/drives - have a
cd/rw and a dvd/rw on separate ides - Nero has no problem recognizing or
burning anything I want to burn - it is just a pain to have the system and
M/P not recognize them ! Have also checked the system compatability web site
all are good - had an upgrade for one of the burners but it has not changed
anything?

I'm not certain which "regedit bit" you are referring to so check the
Problem's section at Alex Nichol's site http://www.aumha.org/a/xpcd.htm and
the info here in the MS Knowledge base
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=324129

Also do you have DMA enabled for the controller that your devices are on?
See here http://www.blackmaxpc.com/Guides/Enable_DMA.htm . If you have an
intel motherboard you may find that installing the intel accelerator (if
your board is listed) from www.intel.com can help.

As an aside the fact that your devices are being "lost" and then are being
recognized periodically suggests more than software problems. Have you
checked to ensure they are properly connected inside the case. While rare it
is possible for connections to become loose. Other problems could be related
to failing drive(s) or motherboard problems.

DMA is enabled intel accelarator installed - regedit bit that you quoted -
and as I said Nero has no problem at any time recognizing or using either
burner windows on the other hand has a problem with recognition - M/P 10 quit
recognizing the rw/drives first shortly after installing M/P connect - the
support site faq said the M/P would not recognize 2 burners on the same ide
so I put 1 on each - compatabilty site had a firmware upgrade for one burner
- installed it as per instr. still not recognized by windows - cables are
good - I might think it was something like that except for the fact that Nero
has no problem ???

In order to use Media Player to burn with you need to have XP's built in
burning software enabled. However it is possible that Nero is conflicting
with it as the two burning engines sometimes don't get along well. Right
click your CD Burner icon and select Properties->Recording Tab then check
the box to enable recording. Reboot. That should allow Media Player to burn
but it may cause problems with Nero or you may end up with problems with
both programs. Personally I'd disable XP's burning software and I would
stick with Nero. It is much better than Media Player and in my opinion much
superior to XP's built in burning software.

I think there is a basic problem with XP SP2 itself - yes it is nice that I
have Nero installed and can do all my burning with that - but when device
manager gives you the model and type of drive installed as a RW and there is
no recording tab on the drives properties something is wrong . I would think
microsoft might have made an error in there SP that is causing all of these
people to suddenly not have burning capabilities that where there before SP2 ?

I have SP2 installed on several systems which also have CD-R/W and DVD-R/W
drives and Nero as well as Media Player 9 or 10. I have not seen the problem
you are referring to.
