burning a file to a CD

Windows XP with all service pacs and updates.
=========================================

So, I'm trying to burn one tune from a folder in "My Music" for my
bother. (No, were not stealing. If he likes it, he'll buy the CD.)

He has a Mac, so I'm wanting to burn the data file to the CD.

I tried dragging the file from my folder to the CD folder.
Once, that worked.

Eleven other times other things happened. So I'd like to know how
you do this!

To be clearer, some of the CDs had a tiny band of burn and the
explorer only showed the one track01.cda file on it.

And, other CDs had a wide band on them, although the file explorer
only showed one file: track01.cda (This wide band appeared to
be about the same size as the CDs which had the complete .mp3 file on
them.)

So what don't I 'get' about this. Why can't I just drag and drop a
file from one folder to the CD folder and have it happen?

What is that deal with the track01.cda file? What does it do,
and why do some of the CDs have just a tiny burn, and some appear to
have the entire song data.

Thanks in advance for steering me in the right direction to
understand this, and to make it simple and foolproof in the future!

If you put a CD into your computer CDROM and you see files like tracko1.tda,
the CD is and audio CD. You can't copy these files to your computer. These
files will need the be ripped and the data file will either be in mp3 of wma.
In this formap files can be played directly from your computer to media
player.

If you see Track01.cda: Audio CD
If you see MP3 or WMA files: Data CD

I can only tell nou how to burn using Nero Burning Rom so aside from this I
can;t help any further.

To Rip an audio cd you will need at least media player 10.

My problem is moving a file from my hard drive to a CD.

Windows Media seems to make it into something other than a straight
data file.

Dragging and dropping doesn't reliably make it a data file, either.

have you tried right clicking on the music file, and choosing send to.. your
CDrom? Rainy

If you send it to the Media Player it'll turn your MP3's into audio files
which have the CDA extention. If you want to burn a data or mp3 CD you will
need a CD burning program like Nero or Roxio.

Yeah, that's one of the many things I tried, and since I didn't keep
notes, I don't know if that put the data file on the CD, or not!

I hate to think that Windows doesn't have a simple way to do that!

But, you may be right that I'll have to get something else to make
that easy!

Hi Alan,
Check the CD for files with a CDA extention such as tracko1.cda. If you see
these files it is not a data cd and is an audio cd like you buy at the store.
Right now as far as I know Media Player can only convert mp3 data files to
audio cd's. It can also rip audio CD's to either mp3 or wma filesto be saves

Yes you are right.. open Media player, then open the file.. it will convert
the file so that you can listen to it on your dvd player, but I thought this
was just one file to be listened to, to judge whether or not the person
would buy the song :) you can send it to the cdrom.. using the send to
command, and play the one file on your computer.. Rainy

I downloaded and tryed the CDBurning Pro software and for freeware this is
really outstanding. You shouldn't have any problem using it.
