not sure that I following exactly what you're after? Are you after this,
for example:

as opposed to

* text

Go and select Bullets and numbering and they will
continue after you press enter.
 
Manually. Don't try to use the automatic bullet feature. Just use Insert
Symbol to insert the type of bullet you want (I have Ctrl+Shift+B assigned
to a simple round bullet that appears in every font), then tab to a tab stop
or indent you have set, type your text, tab again, insert another bullet,
tab again, and type more text. I emphasize that you should set custom tab
stops for all these tabs; don't rely on the built-in ones.
