bullets and margins

I am using style format bullet list 1. Sometimes when I go to a new
paragraph in the bulleted list, the margin on the first bullet changes to a
-0.5, and brings the first bullet into the margin. Any idea why this is
happening and how I can fix it? It doesn't always happen, and it may occur
if the format is being changed from using the bullet button vs. using the
style bullet list 1.

That's the problem, I am using list bullet. Word is actually changing the
left indentation in the paragraph style to -0.5. I have to change it back
within the style window to 0 to fix it. I just opened the document I was
working on yesterday (the bullets were correct when I closed the document)
and now they are at -0.5 again.

Make sure that you modify the indentation via the bullet dialog box,
not via the Paragraph dialog box.

Also, clear the "Automatically update document styles" option in Tools
| Templates and Add-Ins, if it is enabled.

A ha, (see lightbulb going on). I do have auto update unchecked but I have
been using the paragraph format dialog box, not the bullet dialog box. Next
time it happens I'll try that. It's strange how spurious this is.

FWIW, the conflict between numbering/bullet indents and paragraph
indents has been around since Word 97. I believe recent versions have
reduced the problem (but it hasn't necessarily been resolved).
