Yes that's overkill for learning, you could get by with an
800MHz Celeron and 256MB memory if you had to... for the
learning at least, for the actual deployment as a server a
lot more memory and maybe CPU (depends on what it's doing).

Even Celeron 800 is more than necessary to get it running
and play with it, and the 256MB memory, depends on what you
have it doing. There is no need for modern performance
levels to learn, only to set up the actual final
configuration that will be used at "X" thing.
