For a homebased system to practice on and get familiar with it, whats a
minimun hardware requirement to get it going?

Decent processor, hard drive space and at least 512MB RAM. The rest is up to
you.

decent cpu, like a 2.4 533 fsb and a 64mb vid card??

Yes that's overkill for learning, you could get by with an
800MHz Celeron and 256MB memory if you had to... for the
learning at least, for the actual deployment as a server a
lot more memory and maybe CPU (depends on what it's doing).

...to be more specific then, I am in learning mode with Windows 2003 server.,
I have an XP box and want to set up a server box in the same room, connect
to my xp box and play around, learning what to do and what not.

Even Celeron 800 is more than necessary to get it running
and play with it, and the 256MB memory, depends on what you
have it doing. There is no need for modern performance
levels to learn, only to set up the actual final
configuration that will be used at "X" thing.

thankyou kony...
