when I try to get updates an error message informs me
that I must have build 2600. If I don't have build 2600
how do I get it?

Build 2600 is the retail, RTM (released to manufacturer) build, This is the
you build in your local PC store.
If you have an earlier build then the license to use that build expired when
we released the retail/RTM product in Oct 2002
You get build 2600 by buying the retail product.
