[Bugger] Catalyst 4.9

B

Berti Ferranti

Hi Folks,

this one is a real catalyst. Never have i seen such vile stuff! First, it requires me to update the .NET framework, which is bad enough by itself. But on top of that, the new control center is wasting ressources en gros.

Not only is graphically ridiculously overblown (can be cut back), but the only new feature that was really of interest to me, namely a proper profile management to finally allow me to switch between Main screen + TV and Dual Screen view without readjusting resolution, refresh rate, location and type of screen, doesen't work at all. I always get crashes when i try to load or save a profile - the entire software fails to respond. Also, the new settings I had made, using my TV as Desktop extension, didn't kick in until i tried to set it via the control panel. When I clicked on "Advanced", the whole system rebooted - that I call VPU recover. After that of course, everything sorta worked - except for the profiles...

Now, I'm wondering - why do i have 2 instances of that cli.exe file running when i have only one tray symbol? I like to keep my processes clean, and a client that eats 23 Megs of RAM per thread is something that either enhances system performance greatly and allows for a ton of other improvements - or leaves permanently.

Anybody else have these issues, help would be appreciated.

bye Berti

Why is it so "vile"? Just because it is from MS?

There were two options on the download site... one was for the
traditional panel and the other was for the new one. Try downloading
the old-style one and uninstall the new one.

You decided to download the version which requires the .NET Framwork, and
while I agree that ATI should make sure everything is good about the new
control panel before releasing it, the version with the old control panel
is available. That's what I'm using and it works fine. I have no need
for the new design.

I know, but one thing I really want is the Profile Management, and I thought
if somebody knew how to fix that, I meight try to live with 50 Megs of RAM
wasted.

Seems like I'll be going for the other version shortly.

And yes, I am strongly against the .NET framework because it is another
attempt at dominating the market in which in this case Java has done a
magnificient job so far.
Plus I have issues with that fix itself, since it has reactivated that
stupid login screen I thought I had banned from my sight forevermore. I also
don't see why I should download a 23 Megabyte patch, just for this fancy
control center to work. Seems like I'll have to do a lot of uninstalling in
the morrow...

You're pissing into the wind, trying to avoid using
..NET. It's gonna replace almost all the VB runtimes
and other such stuff as more and more developers
write apps based on it.

I do agree, however, that it's a poor choice to use it
for the Control Panel interface. Much better to code
that using native API's and VC or C++ and keep it
lean 'n mean.

And when I installed .NET CF stand alone, outside
of any software install package, I did NOT
get the login screen issues you all are getting with
the CAT install. But that may just be my particular
setup.

Judging by your horrid HTML post and uncontrollable long lines of plain
text, I'm not surprised you didn't see the non .net version over at ATI.

Well, I did see it and still purposefully went to the CCC version.

Other than that, I am using OE as client, and I have set each and every
option to "Text-Only"

From my perspective, the CCC version looked like a bad idea the first
time I saw it. No Java, first generation, etc. Later my skepticism was
confirmed after reading an overwhelming majority of posts in here from
disappointed users. Despite the OCP version not having a SmartGART tab
due to another oversight from ATI, I'm happy enough with it as the
install went effortlessly.
Other than that, I am using OE as client, and I have set each and

If you must use Outleak Express, that's the way to do it.
