buffer overrun in messenger service

I keep on getting this pop up window messenger urging me
to go to windowspatch .com regarding a buffer overrun
messenger service could allow code execution.
Is it true?
Do I really need to download a certain software?
Please let me know a.s.a.p.
I just don't want to get ripped off (the software is
$19.95) and I defenetely don't want to download something
that may be damaging to my laptop.

Thank You.
