This windows XP home keeps crashing with a stop error that references a
file, ndis.sys. I think that's a networking file, so I removed F&PS and
windows client, reinstalled, and still get the same error.

It also has an ATI graphics card that seems to keep losing the settings I
give it. the computer almost always restarts in 640 x 480 and something
like 16 colors.

What do to now?

Others have had luck updating the drivers for their network card. Your
ATI card probably needs updating too.

Download the latest drivers from the manufacturer and see if that helps.

Updating network card drivers is good advice. You are right that ndis.sys
is a networking file, and it interacts very closely with the network card
drivers.

It's fairly removed from things like F&PS.

updated to lasted video drivers from DELL for this card, factory-installed
by dell.

Also dl'ed latest drivers for at least one of the networking devices, a USB
nic. I'm not sure about another that's listed but I can't physically find.

But now that I think about it, isn't ndis.sys a Windows system file?

How can that be "reinstalled"?
