Vista Home Premium.
Constantly getting BSOD, found to be Firewall (Zone Alarm). Uninstalled Zone
Alarm and no more BSOD, however Add Remove program listing is now incomplete
(missing several installed programs for uninstall that were there before
uninstalling Zone Alarm). Is there any way to fix the Programs and Features
(Add Remove Programs) listing?

I am certain that the problem is within Zone Alarm. If I restore the system
the BSOD problem is back (as are all the program listings in Add Remove
Programs), disabling the system firewall has no effect on the problem.
Uninstall Zone Alarm according to their instructions and the Add Remove
Programs listing is changed. Not all of the programs are missing from the
listing just about half are gone bu at least I can use the machine.

You are not going to find anything better than the Vista FW and Vista in
itself due to the advanced features the FW and Vista are using.

outbound protection didn’t exist in the Windows XP firewall and why it

Geodane:

ZA v 7.1.218+ is supposed to be SP1 compatible. The current free dnload is
v7.1.248, which I have not tried with SP1.

Above is per:
http://www.betanews.com/article/Vista_SP1_breaks_ZoneAlarm_Trend_Micro_apps_among_others/1203618180

" 10:25 pm EST February 21, 2008 - This evening, a spokesperson for Check
Point Software Technologies, the parent company for ZoneAlarm, told BetaNews
that the build number Microsoft supplied us with for the version of
ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite it said was incompatible with Vista SP1,
was inaccurate. That build number should have been 7.1.105, stated Check
Point's Heather Haas, and not 7.1.218, which she said is compatible with
Vista SP1 and, in her words, "is not blocked."

"Check Point worked very closely with Microsoft during the development of
SP1 and we worked very hard to make sure we had a compatible product
available prior to the release of SP1," Haas stated. "We have reached out to
all of our current 7.1 customers to ensure they have the most up-to-date
version of the product before installing SP1." "

I am currently testing COMODO Firewall Pro in SP1 with excellent results.

Kayman:

I partially disagree.
For outbound application control the Vista f/w is not convenient to use.
So I have used ZA free in Vista sans SP1, and COMODO Firewall Professional
in Vista with SP1 for outbound application control.

Therefore, I run two f/ws concurrently; one for application filtering, and
one for packet filtering (Vista's).
