BSOD on computer rename

M

Miang

Hoping one of you lovely folks can help me...

When I try to rename my computer in (going through My
Computer -> Properties -> Computer Name tab -> Change), I
can type in the new name I want, click 'ok', and a message
pops up saying I have to restart the system for the change
to take effect. Fine. But every time I restart, Windows
loads ok through the login, and then when it hits the
"loading your personal settings" part it immedately hangs.

The blue screen of death that follows lists a registry
error as the problem, but doesn't say in English which one.
The stop code is 0x00000051 (0x00000004, 0x00000001,
0xE33E1290, 0x00018838).

It may be informative to note that I've upgraded the
motherboard and processor recently, so I wound up having to
do a repair on my XP installation a couple of days ago.
That went off relatively without a hitch, though, and
everything aside from this seems to be functioning normally
now.

Can anyone tell me what specifically is going wrong with
the name-change process, and better yet, what I can do
about it? I just want the computer to be identified by a
different name, and I've never encountered problems doing
that before. :\

Thanks in advance...

Unfortunately, I'd already come across that link...my
problem is not in identifying that it's a registry error or
being able to recover (I can use 'last good configuration'
on reboot and WinXP loads just fine), but rather that I'm
1. not seeing where the error occurs between changing the
computer name and rebooting (other than *something* screws
up in the registry), and
2. as such, I've no idea what needs to be fixed in order
for me to be able to change the computer name without
causing registry errors.

Thank you for the link anyway, though...any other suggestions?
