BSOD on boot up

Kevin

This is an existing install of WinXP Professional SP1. I
can boot into safe mode and nothing else. When I boot
normally or last know good config I get: STOP: 0x0000008e
(0xc0000005, 0x03020100, 0xfc72b4f8, 0x00000000)

I have tried to change startup using msconfig while in
safe mode to diagnostic mode and selective mode but it
still will not boot without that BSOD. I don't know the
history of the comp or what has been installed lately,
just a tech and had this shipped to me. Thanks.

When I get systems like that, the first thing I do is to uninstall the video
drivers (or just remove the hardware) while in safe mode. About 50% of the
time that does it. Then, if that wasn't it, I go to add/remove programs and
start removing the non-essential junk: weatherbug, antivirus stuff, games.
Then, I do a full system scan with UPDATED patterns for viruses and usually
one of those three things gets me off and booting again. If I found a virus
had corrupted part of windows, I'll reinstall over the top to replace files
and sometimes that works.
