browsing network folder SLOW when lots of files

I'm upgrading users in our department to XP Pro. We login to a
Domain, users have a "home" drive that is mapped.

One of our users has an enormous number of files at the root of her
home drive (>1,800) and it takes a LONG time for the files to be
listed when she clicks on the mapped drive icon. deleting or moving
these files from her home drive is not an option. Of course, with
Win98, the file listings appeared instantly.

I've seen bits and pieces on Google and the Knowledgebase about this,
but never a clear, easy, and definitive "fix" for this problem.

What do I turn on, off, or change, to have her network drive contents
appear instantly?

thank you,
barb

yeah, well, you'd think that would be an easy thing to do...

But, because "it used to work fine" when this user was running Win98,
the user is balking at that solution, AND, I can't exactly force her.
It really doesn't make much sense to me that XP should take many many
many times longer to read the contents of a folder than 98 did/does/

XP xfers/uses a heck of a lot more "file info" than 98 did. No you can't
"force" her, but she will wait while it retrieves the data she wants
displayed, so the question is how much data does she want in one go?

ok then, there apparently is no solution.
sigh.
