Browsing issues through VPN

G

Greatdane

I have a Windows 2000 Server, and a Windows XP
workstation. The server is set to recieve VPN connections
through RAS. The workstation is on the domain. I am able
to connect to the VPN, my scripts run I am given logical
drives from the server. I am able to see the contents of
these drives on the server... xfer files etc.. open
Exchange mail... I can ping any address on the network by
name or by IP. I can even access other workstation files
using the run command and browsing through UNC. However if
I try and browse the domain network using explorer I can
only see myself.... any ideas why?

A VPN connection does not carry LAN broadcasts, so the VPN client will
not be in the same browse list as the LAN machines.

It will be able to browse the LAN if it has the correct IP address for
the domain master browser. If the LAN isn't running WINS, that probably
means setting up an LMHOSTS file on the VPN client with an entry for the DMB
using its special Netbios name <domainname 1b> .
