Browsing folders in Internet Explorer in Windows XP

In windows 2000 the user could click on a URL of "file:e:\refdocs\" and the
user could browse the folders under the e:\refdocs path within intenet
explorer.

In Windows XP nothing happens when clicking on a URL as listed above. It is
possible to browse folders by typing "e:\refdocs\" in the address bar but not
by clicking on a URL.

In Windows 2000 the word "file" in the URL seemed to trigger IE to use the
folder mode. Is there a setting in Windows XP that will accomplish the same
thing?

If not, what is the syntax to use in a URL to browse folders in IE. This
behavior change seems to be associated with Windows XP not with IE either
version 6x or 7.

Thanks

if you do a ctrl+o the ie browser
will give you the pop up to
search your folders and open
files.

although it's not defaulted
at installation, the ie browser
has a menu bar with the file open
option. just right click somewhere
near the tabs and enable it.
