Jim Scott laid this down on his screen :
I am finding more and more sites which do not function correctly on
Firefox/Mozilla. Although I have been a fan of these from the start my
patience is wearing thin. The announcement that FF 1.1 is to be delayed
leads me to look for an IE shell, in the meantime. I have used Maxthon and
Avast and although they are good, they are full of stuff I don't want or
need AND I know that I can tweak them down to what I want, but I 'don't
want'.
What I _do_ want (even if temporarily) is an IE shell with tabs, ad
blocking and pop-up blocking - and nothing else!!
(NOT Opera please)

Someone might have already answered, but give these simpler ones a try:

Just curious... could you give some links?

Thanks,

I have the same problem with FF. For instance, FF aborts if I
go to the following site:
http://www.us.map24.com/

and then enter a starting point and destination in the "Calculate
Route" section( middle, left side of screen).
When I hit "next", FF crashes.

I tried it in I.E. and it's fine.

That must be a problem with your Java plugin installation. I'm using the
Belgian version of the site, http://www.map24.be/, all the time without
problems and it has exactly the same interface.

I'd suggest reinstalling a recent JRE (Java Runtime Environment) from Sun
(see http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp). Note that you only need
the "JRE" unless you want to do Java development.

Wald

I suspect that far fewer programmers
worked on IE than are currently producing nightlies of a browser
that still does not work as well, and barely works at all
without numerous extensions and plug-ins. I makes one wonder how
single programmers can produce a shell like Avant which makes IE
work better than FFox, without extensions and smaller too.

Hehe... you forgot to enclose it in <personal opinion> tags.

In my case, it tends to vary quite a lot. I've typically got TBird
running all day, using it for email only, checking 6 accounts, and
here's the situation right now:
Thunderbird version 1.0 (20041206), Windows 2000, 512 MB RAM:
43184 kb.
After restart: 26396 Kb.

Hmmm, are you using the same version? I got new versions for awhile
and stuck with the version listed above. It's quick and very stable.
I'm checking two accounts, but I generally close it after doing the
email thing. I'll leave it open and see if it uses more ram today.

It's been open about 30 minutes now and I'm showing:

18,124 k used.

It seems to vary slightly both upwards and downwards.

TB has been open about an hour now and varies between 1,133k and
4,764k. It checks two accounts every 10 minutes.

Minimized, right? In that case I get similar results :)

Down boy. Who's talking about blame here? I was just saying that these tab
extensions can lead to problems such that clicking on links don't work,
that's all. Otherwise links shouldnt be a problem.

Fuzzy Logic

Avant has a big flaw, unless I am missing a setting. The windows open
up funny when you open a new tab New windows only open inside the main
Avant window, making it not much fun to work with.

What do you mean by 'funny'? All windows are supposed to open in the main
Avant window as that's how a tabbed browser works.

I've run into the problem with links not working (using Avant) but so
rarely, its not
an issue for me.

I like the idea of "opensource" so I wouldn't debate with anyone
that prefers Firefox/Mozilla over the I.E. add-on programs. I do
wonder how many
"Oooooohs" and "Aahhhhhs" I read about Firefox are from users who have
never
tried Avant, I.E.2, Slimbrowser, etc.

If Firefox was my first experience with Tabbed browsing, I would
probably be posting
the same "Oooooohs" and "Aahhhhhs".

My understanding is that Firefox is the better
choice if you are concerned about spyware, trojans, etc. , With the
popularity of
Firefox/Mozilla, I assume its only a matter of time before this is no
longer true.

I noticed that my Spyware S&D program is checking for spyware from the
eBay Toolbar.
If you can't trust the big sites to refrain from loading this crap on
your PC, I would
recommend caution regardless of which browser you are using.

Fuzzy, that is not true. You can open Firefox in a tab or a separate
window. Avant only opens in the Avant "environment" so to speak (they
can be moved around the main Avant window, but they cannot be moved out
of it, and seperate windows are still in the main pane. SOMETIMES you
need a separate window (with some programs at work, that is why I had to
stop using Avant there). If I am missing a setting, then it would not
be a problem.

I just tried it and it works great on my FF. It paused to check out
the java available and proceeded fine. Thanks for a great website,
by the way! I'm in Canada and in a rural area. It's just fantastic to
work so fast on my dialup. Thanks again and yes it do's work.

Er no. While not posting Aahhhs and oooohs, my "love affair" with firefox
has nothing to do with tab browsing.

Well I'm sure firefox will be targetted more as popularity grows, butthat
won't magically make firefox more insecure. A secure product doesn't
suddenly become insecure when the user base increases.

I just discovered it recently myself. It's a good alternative

no i am using it and it is very good.
No problem at all.

What advantages does it have over TBE? I've been using TBE for ages and
have never had any problems with it at all, despite what some say about
it...

Cousin Stanley

Cousins REM & wald ....

Thanks for the replies re memory usage in Mozilla-Thunderbird ....

I've checked a few times over the last couple of days
and have also noticed a fairly wide range of memory usage ....

The lowest has been about 20 MB ....
The highest has been about 32 MB ....

Wondering now how much the number of downloaded headers
& messages while reading a particular NG might influence
the memory usage if at all ....

I like to keep several months worth of messages available
with their threads and flagged/watched messages intact
and only reset the groups once or twice a year ....

Perhaps the amount of data here could have an affect
on memory/caching .... perhaps not ....
