Browser window opens then closes on its own...

My browser (ie6) seems to work perfectly as long as the next link is brought
up on the same instance/window. However, links that bring up a new window
stay open for a second or less and then simply disappear. No error message
or any other indication. Just briefly flashed and then gone.

The Advanced Setting "Reuse windows when launching shortcuts" seems to have
no effect on it -- in fact, I can't see any effect that this setting has on
anything.

Can anyone help with this or at least point me in a direction that might
help me resolve it?

Thanks in advance,

Howard

Btw, I've confirmed that the same URL that is bringing up the new window
that then immediately closes will work just fine if typed into the address
bar of the initial instance. So this issue related to the new
instance/window, not the site itself.

Ok, a couple more pieces of info -- just in case anyone decides to help...

(1) I'm running XP Home
(2) If I right click and use "Open in new window", it will open the page in
a new window and it stays open.

I saw a reference to ie helper objects that can sometimes cause similar
problems. The first one I disabled was Windows Messenger and wa la, problem
fixed.

I spoke too soon. I would swear that, after disabling the Windows Messenger
ie helper I was able to open a new window just by left-clicking on the link.
But after re-booting I'm back to where I probably always have been. When I
left-click it brings the new window up -- at least the header portion of the
new window -- and then disappears in a second or less. Gone. Poof.

If I right-click on it and select "Open in new window" it opens just fine.
Also, pasting the same link in the first instance will cause it to open [in
that instance] just fine as well.

I'm back to needing some help if anyone has some ideas or experience with
this.

If you have the yahoo toolbar installed, then de-install it using add/remove
programs. It is causing this problem for a lot of folks even if it's
disabled!
