Browser Settings Change

Big Rich

I have been having a problem for some time now with my
homepage being reset to (what looks like) a microsoft
site. The text in the search bar always refers to a file
called gjyhy.dll. I have changed all my settings in the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE AND HKEY_CURRENT_USER directories to
remove references to this file, but they just keep
reappearing. I presume there must be a file somewhere that
is causing this, but neither my McAffe virus scan nor a
search using the McAffe privacy service have found
anything suspicious. It's driving me crazy! Does anyone
know how I can find out what's causing this.

Thanks
Richard

I would download and use Adaware SE from Lavasoft and Spybot Search and
Destroy plus CWShredder as it would appear that you have spyware installed.
McAfee wouldn't usually detect that. and as far as Privacy Service
goes...not sure how you got that to scan as it doesn't have that option.
Adaware SE (don't forget add-ons) http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/
Spybot S & D http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
CWShredder http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4086.html (updates for this are
down right now as there web site is being reconstructed).
other good protection is provided by Spyware Blaster at
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html - it prevents spyware
from invading without you having to run it.

I'd definitely follow Peter's advice.

Not sure that McAffee is up to the mark for spyware / malware detection and
removal.

Definitiely have something hijacking your browser. Check on Norton's Web
Site for a Backdoor Trojan removal tool: run this in case you have this
trojan installed.

Footnote, I find McAfee good most of the time but although it detects some
Adware it isn't really designed as a primary Spyware tool. it's excellent,
however, at detecting viruses.
