browser problem / search engine / someone please help ???

first i would like to say that i am not very pc literate,
but am asking help from any kind person out there who can
make sense of my problem.

when in a website, (example: google.com or yahoo.com), i
am having a problem using the search mechanism for the
subject of my choice. i get a message as follows:

http 404 - file not found.

i have a dell pc. my internet provider checked the modem
(ok), computer (brand new), and the settings of the
internet browser were set to default.

can someone help me ???
