Browser automatically resizing

Hi. I just got a new laptop yesterday and I noticed that when I was browsing
(in both IE and Firefox) that sometimes when I click (using my touchpad) that
my browser window will either resize itself to about half the screen or
minimize. Anyone have any idea what may be causing that or how to fix it?

Thanks.

You probably have your touchpad sensitivity set too high. Since you just
got the new laptop with Vista preinstalled, presumably the touchpad
drivers are known to work although it never hurts to check at the laptop
mftr.'s tech support site for updated drivers. That said, your first
step is to go to the mouse/touchpad Control Panel applet and lower the
touchpad sensitivity.

Same problem here. Brand new Toshiba Satellite does not appear to have a
touchpad sensitivity applet. Still not sure what's causing it.

Hi, Pete, mine is also a Toshiba satellite. I poked around in control panel
and I think I found the answer, thanks to Malke's advice. It's control panel
--> mouse --> Device Settings --> setting button under the window --> the
sensitivity is there, but it turns out that my laptop had something called
"tap zones" enabled (under "tapping"), and depending on where you tap on the
touchpad, it does different things. I turned it off and I hope that ends the
mysterious resizing.

Thanks for the solution, wolfdreamer. Since I don't have a laptop
running Vista, I wasn't able to give you the exact path but you found it
anyway. :-)

Hope this does the trick for you.

Thanks so much... the window resizing was driving me crazy! Instead
of turning off the tap zones, I made them smaller and customized them
to our most frequent activities. Top Left - program we use most
often, Bottom Left - start menu, Top & Bottom Right - volume control.
Now, if only I can master scrolling! Natalie

Thanks so much for this post. I too have a brand new toshiba sattelite with
windows vista. I had posted the question on the IE bulletin awhile back and
haven't gotten a reply. I found the settings and "fixed" the problem thanks
to you guys. Kudos to you.

thankyou, thankyou. It was driving me nuts!

Wolfdreamer, you rock. I've been struggling with this stupid tap zone thing
for MONTHS. Thanks from the bottom of my no-longer-randomly-resizing window!

This is great but tapping is so useful removing it is not ideal. I did notice
that sensitivity should be reduced in high humidity conditions. I found this
problem happens when I have been playing poker for a long time (so when I tap
'raise' it minimizes and I timeout and lost money!!).
Obviously my hands were getting sweaty (sorry to be crude).

My solution is to get one of those clear sticky bits of plastic which cover
screen displays on new products like mobiles and iPods and stick it over the
pad then *increase* the sensitivity to compensate.

So far so good :-)

You're right, removing the tapping function is not ideal. To properly fix
the problem, Go through the control panel to the mouse settings and then
device settings then to settings, the very bottom choice on the tree is the
sensitivity option. If you open that, it will give you the choice of the tap
sensitivity. This is for the TOSHIBA SATELLITE. Just read thru the couple of
sentences which explain how the sensitivity works and then play with it.
Just change it one bar either direction at a time to see how it works. For
me, I had to go two bars in the heavy direction and did not even consider
removing the tapping function. My computer works like a dream. Of course,
right now it's raining like winter in Seattle so come summer time I may need
to change it to be more like summer in Arizona!
