browse in same window option for .rtf files

I want to use word as my editor for opening .rtf files. I go to folder
options in control panel and modify the "open" action, but the "browse in
same window" option is greyed out.

Is there a way to modify the registry or something to allow .rtf files to
have the same behavior as .doc files when they are opened from a web page?

In windows explorer, right click on a .rtf file. Choose
open with and associate the file with word. There's a
check box at the bottom to set this as a default.
