In the hopes of saving my fellow space travelers hours, if not weeks
(as it was with me), of time and effort, here's the solution I have
finally found to address this troubling (but apparently not uncommon)
issue.
The following is an extrapolated and renumbered from the Microsoft KB
Article ID: 314073. On the local XP Pro machine to which your Brother
USB printer is physically connected, do the following:
1. Click Start, click Run, type control.exe in the Open box, and then
click Printers and Faxes.
2. Double-click Add a printer, and then click Next.
3. Click Local printer attached to this computer, and then click Next.
4. Click the same port that you used for the previous driver. Use the
drop-down list to select the USB port to which your printer is
attached.
5. Click Have Disk, and then type the name of the installation folder
for your updated driver. Or, assuming that it's not out of date, you
can obtain the drivers directly from your original installation CD.
6. Continue with Setup.
You may have to use a name variation to avoid duplication with the
pre-existing Brother icon in Printers and Faxes, but after using the
procedure above you can delete it.
My remote XP Pro server had the relevant Brother printer drivers
installed before implementing this procedure, so I cannot verify
whether their existence was an essential element or not. Other posts
say such drivers are necessary.
In any case, my local Brother printer is now redirected and is the
default printer in RD sessions to that remote XP Pro server.
