Brother Laser Printer HL-1440

I am having trouble with the subject Brother Laser Printer HL-1440. I am
using an iMAC with OSX 10.3. Symptoms:
1. I get a "Printer not responding" message; there hasn't been any alarm
lights that I can remember
2. The machine wont feed from the paper tray or from the manually
entered paper.
3. Pushing the test button only gives me a green "ready" light; I hear a
motor grinding, but no other effect.
4. I get no difference in (non-) performance after I use the off/on switch
5. I pull the plug and replace it, still no effect.
6. Before all this happened, the printout was high quality, there didn't
seem to be any sign of lack of toner. Thus, haven't tried replacing the
toner yet.

Can anybody explain what's needed to fix it?

Thanks,
Larry Wiener

Turn the printer power off.
Press and hold the button on the front and turn the power on, do not release
the button until the power is one. Briefly release the button and press it
again, watch the lights cycle. When the Drum light comes on release the button
immediately. This should print a test page. You may have to repeat this until
you get it right. If that works then the printer is OK. What concerns me is the
grinding noise, sometimes these printers start failing to pick up paper and it
makes a distinctive noise, it may be that is what is happening. Remove the
paper tray and look under the printer, there is a roller at centre front, clean
this with a damp cloth. If that fixes the problem then the roller is worn and a
new one will soon be needed.

Tony:
I did as you suggested and did indeed get a test sheet printed out.
The roller looks good. Then I (duh!) re-set the Printer Setup Utility in
the OS X System Preferences. All that seemed to do the job, and I was able
to get some sheets printed out.
Thanks; you're a real life saver.
Sincerely,
Larry Wiener
