broken banners on certain pages

I've been using IE all my life. And over time, I've made various tweaks and
changes--many of which I cannot remember. Anyway, the problem I'm having is
that on certain websites, banners and pictures always come up as broken.

For example, when I go to gizmodo.com, the banner on the top and on the left
is always broken - and all I ever see is: "internet explorer cannot display
the webpage."

I currently have IE7, the latest Java, Flash, and Shockwave. Is this
something that has to do with scripts or activex?
