I have just signed up for a broadband Internet connection
and would like to check what speed connection I am getting
from my ISP. With a dial-up connection this was presented
in the dial-up connection dialog box that appears when the
connection was made however as I am now connecting using
ADSL this no longer appears. Can someone tell me an easy
way to check what speed connections I am getting?

Downloading a large (over 20mb) file from a site with a large pipeline such
as Microsoft Download will give you a fair estimation of your throughput.

Just start a download of say, XP Service Pack 2 RC1 and let it run for 5
minutes. You will see your throughput on the download dialog. Also,
TaskManager's Networking component can be set up to show your bytes/sec
download rate.

These web pages have tests that measure the actual speed of an
Internet connection:
