XP PRO MEDIA CENTER 2005 (preinstalled)on new Dell xps-200 system.I have an
older epson printer(EPL-5700i).I had an old Dell with the printer up and
running with 98 and then I upgraded with XP HOME.The new XP-HOME ED. OS
recognized the printer and it worked fine.I tried to install printer on my
new Dell system without success. It asked for CD and started the file transfer
when it went to install the files it said error nothing to install .I checked
for support on EPSON site found only that it will run on and up to WINDOWS 98
and NT.My question. Is it posible to get around wiping out my brand new XP PRO
MEDIA 2005 system in order to follow the same installation process(With Hope
That It Will Install The Printer Using My Preinstall Disk)so that I can keep
that old EPSON that uses the "cheap" powder toner.I am also currently using a
new Dell photo 924 printer.I would love to be able to use both and if it will
help I am not afraid to go into registry to make changes with the proper step
by step advise.Any help from you sharp software techs would be recieved with
great joy. Thanks in advance from a seminary student in Louisiana.

If the printer driver written for Windows NT will not install in
this computer with Windows XP, then the printer is defunct insofar
as XP is concerned. The remaining option is to run it as a "generic"
printer, relying on the printer's own internal, native fonts and
their sizing. Or consider visiting Epson's support site and look for
what this particular printer emulates and hope that the print drivers
for the emulated model still exists.

As for downgrading the entire computer system, keep in mind that the
computer system, itself, might not be fully supported by Windows 98.

You will probably have to locate the .INF file that your Windows XP
Home machine used to install the driver for this printer. There
should be a method of transferring the driver to your XP Media Center
but I am not sure how to do it.

Try posting this question to the microsoft.public.windowsxp.print_fax
newsgroup as that is where the printer experts are most likely to be
found.

Good luck

I would think you would be able to use the Compatibility Feature for that
printer whihc makes XP think it is running in a legacy environemnt for a
particular program.
A very quick look tells me that XP jas a native driver for the EPL-5700
printer so don't use the EPson program and let XP install it.
