Branch Office Server

I wanted to know the best way to setup a branch office
server. I am Running SBS 2000 as the HUB server, I have
got W2k advanced on another server which will be the
Branch server. If i want the Branch server to be part of
the domain but still be on its own, should it be another
DC on the network and should I use ADScript to setup
active directory on them. The Branch server will utilize
the HUB exchange server for mail through a VPN/firewall
connection. Can Anyone suggest the proper way to set this
small 5 user brach office through a VPN connection with
W2k Advanced.... Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty sure SBS does not allow another DC. So you will have to make that new server a domain member.
but still be on its own

Not sure what that means... but I guess a member will do it. It will allow you to access domain resources.
a VPN/firewall connection

Make sure that VPN does not block any ports.

Willem,

SBS does indeed allow for another Domain Controller. This is the case in
SBS 2000 and I am sure in SBS 2003 ( although I have nor tried that yet ).
You simply have to make the SBS Server the first Domain Controller and then
add additional Domain Controllers to an existing domain. You can also not
have any trusts ( except in the case of SBS2000 to SBS2003 where you can
have a temporary - seven day IIRC - trust in order to migrate from the old
to the new ).

You can also have additional member servers.

I don't think SBS can deal with any other DCs, so you need two NT5.0
(2K) or 5.2 (2K3) servers - they may be mixed. You don't want to
authenticate through a VPN.

Speaking of which: what's the effective speed of your VPN? A lot of
inter-server traffic is time-sensitive.

That's right, my mistake. So you could use an additional DC. You probably should then, as that will allow your brance office users to logon without the VPN.

I wondered about that. One the one hand you have SBS, to save money presumably, and then you pay for a expensive license you don't need? Surely the standard server is sufficient.
