bottom status bar gone

For some reason the bottom status bar is gone and I'm not sure how to get it
back.

Check View-Status Bar.

Try this:
Go to Windows Explorer/View/Status Bar. Then go to Tools/Folder
Options/View/Apply to all folders. Works for IE as well.
