Hi, I had Linux and Windows installed in my laptop. I erased the Linu
partition and now when I turn my laptop on I get an error from Linu
saying that GRUB has failed and I can't do anything else. What I nee
to do is to make Windows boot first again. I tryed using fdisk t
re-write the Master Boot Record but it failed showing the followin
error

ERROR: Can't save original MBR. Operation unsuccessful
Press a key to continue

Anybody know what I can do to boot into windows again??
thanks

Did you use Fdisk /mbr with Linux or Windows 98 SE?

Could also boot from Win XP and use Recovery Console to run fixmbr or fixboot!
XP only has fixmbr and fixboot

Need to ensure Windows partition is set as "Active".

In OP, you said you used Fdisk that is Win 98. for Fdisk you would've had to
boot from Win98 disk.
For fixmbr or fixboot, have to boot from XP CD and use recovery console.
So how could you have used fixmbr or fixboot?

Anyway. Boot from XP CD and start recovery console.
Once in recovery console, at command type: diskpart
type: list volume
type: select volume ## , where ## is volume you want. maybe only one.
type: list partition
type: select partition ##, same as above
type: active
type: exit

Reboot computer.

If this doesn't work, sorry it's above me. My only suggestion is to put HD
in another computer and see if you can read drive. Copy personal docs to new
HD or removable media. Then reinstall in original computer. Perform "Clean
Install". this deletes HD and you start fresh.

Another option is to repost as no one else will probably respond once post
is a couple days old.

What I used was XP Quick Boot Diskette which I downloaded from
bootdisk.com and burned it as an emulated flopy. I tryed using fixmbr
but was not recognized and Fdisk did work. I don't have right now my
XP cd but I will next monday. I wil try what you said and if not I
will reinstall everything again. Thanks a lot for your help!

Since you do have Fdisk on your Quick boot floppy, it would be lots easier to
set active partition with Fdisk because it is menu driven or has user
interface.

Diskpart is all commands and lot harder to use.

Use Fdisk and follow menu to set partition active. Although I don't know for
sure this will work. Fdisk might only recognize FAT file system partitions.
If your XP is NTFS file system, Fdisk might not recognize it. I don't know
if that will interfere with it making the partition active.

If this fails, I guess you will have to use Diskpart.
